Two Winners in Michigan

After a 54-42 loss to Michigan State in Crisler Arena, Ann Arbor isn’t smiling this morning.  The reality of the Wolverines’ NCAA aspirations have rapidly vaporized in the swoon of seven losses in nine games and they now sport a 15-10 record.  No doubt, at the end of the night, losing to Tom Izzo and the mighty Spartans doesn’t feel good.  But, even in a loss, and perhaps in no game more than last night’s, Michigan’s winning transformation from the malaise of Tommy Amaker’s era was abundantly apparent. Minnesota’s Sweet D

The reign of Purdue’s Chris Kramer as the Big Ten’s finest defensive player is over.  Rather than a knock on Kramer, it’s an acknowledgment that Minnesota’s Damian Johnson is a remarkable player and a defensive force.  After hounding future lottery pick Earl Clark into a miserable shooting game in the Golden Gophers’ 70-64 win over Louisville, Johnson gets another shot at proving his mettle when Raymar Morgan and Michigan State hit Williams Arena at high noon. Loose Balls: December 16

One Z-Pack, two refills of penicillin, one bottle of Advil (maybe more) and a room scattered with Kleenex.  It’s been a deep and dark December at Hoopraker.  In two weeks marked by our infirmity, a few simple truths have become self-evident for the basketball teams at Purdue, Wisconsin, and Michigan State.  (more…)

Something Afoot in West Lafayette?

Matt Painter and Purdue enter a season marked with high expectations.  But, in a season-opening 82-50 win against Detroit, E’twaun Moore found himself on the bench at tip off, having lost his starting spot for what’s been called a violation of team rules during practice.  Painter laid down the law and swiftly.  While Moore’s digression may or may not be an isolated incident, with the cascade of transfers in recent seasons (none more surprising than Scott Martin) at the very least, it’s worth keeping one eye gazed on Purdue’s chemistry as they steam into a season as Conference favorites.  (more…)
