Such are the kingly basketball standards in East Lansing that even the best start in the 109-year history of the program, twenty wins by early February, and the tenth spot in the current AP poll aren’t enough to keep Izzo and the legions of his zone from maligning the team that has delivered these riches. Outside the State of Indiana, the names and talents of Robbie Hummel and E’Twaun Moore were not particularly well-known at the season’s inception. It was the darlings of Major Media, IU’s Eric Gordon and Thad Matta’s next great recruiting class led by Kosta Koufos and John Diebler, who received the acclaim rather than Matt Painter’s Indiana bred freshman four. With his eclipsing of Dean Smith’s 879 career wins last January Bob Knight sanctified what any clear-sighted hoops maven already knew to be as immoveable as the ball screens he taught his charges over the past four decades. Sometimes the numbers lie. In this case they delivered the clean-burning truth. Until proven otherwise Knight took official possession of his status as the finest college basketball coach and teacher to ever stalk a sideline. (more…)

Another snow driven weekend through the Big Ten saw Purdue, led by the explosive emergence of freshman E’Twaun Moore, maintain the unremitting pace set by Bo Ryan’s steely Badgers to stay atop the conference heap. Penn State showed heart in State College against a Michigan State team struck with a bout of malaise and whistles. And Ohio State found itself impotently watching a basketball revival in Iowa City.
