Tornadoes and Lightning in January

Though there were tornadoes and lightning on the outside, the Horizon League contest in the Gentile Center on the Loyola University campus in Chicago, was a calm and well-contested game between Loyola and Butler. Nationally ranked No. 14, the Butler Bulldogs demonstrated their signature style in playing aggressive defense and executing an offense that features crisp cuts and passes, impressive spacing, and sharp shooting both from the outside and inside. Boilermakers in East Lansing

The present and the future of the conference meet tonight when Matt Painter takes his young Purdue Boilermakers (10-4) into the heart of Spartan Country for a crash course in hard hat Big Ten Basketball. Along with the Kohl Center, the Breslin Center, catalyzed by its Izzone student section, is the most passionate basketball atmosphere in the Conference. For the Boilermakers, it’s an opportunity for rapid maturation.

Chief Concerns

The chants of “Chief Chief” rising into the Pasadena canyons last Tuesday were the moans of an Illini nation, dazed and embittered, trying to balm itself in the comforts of tradition. Perhaps if they incanted the name of their cherished minstrel show mascot, he would hop out of the carbon haze and heal them with another last dance. (more…)

Sketching a Season

The opening nights of Big Ten play give way to the weekend and after a handful of games, some faithful sense optimism while others have heart palpitations. Without mincing words, Illinois looked horrible at home and Jamar Buter made Ohio State look ready to compete. Penn State made Northwestern look demoralized in the second half en route to an earnest win. If not for a late spurt, Indiana would have lost at Carver Hawkeye. On Saturday we get our first conference glimpses of the Spartans, Boilermakers, and Golden Gophers. (more…)

Life In The Mid-Majors

Much is made of growing parity in college basketball and there is a lot of evidence that basketball in the Mid-Major conferences is every bit as good as it is in the six major conferences that rule the media outlets and, to a great extent, dominate the governance and management of the NCAA including Tournament selection process. Loose Balls: January 2

We’ve polished our crystal ball, muttered a few incantations and impatiently gleaned into its vacuous innards. The culmination of three regime changes, some big wins and some worse losses, the Big Ten Conference Season awaits. Over the next 75 days, expect the unexpected as freshmen morph to upperclassmen and at least one team will likely assert itself as truly elite.
