The Seniors

21 seniors will file out of the locker rooms in the United Center this weekend, some wearing candy stripped warm ups and some bearing the insult of corporate America in form fitting uniforms. From the elites Alando Tucker and Carl Landry to the anonymous such as Chris Harltey, they will hit their stride and embrace the familiar rituals in a rhythmic cadence of lay up lines and jump shots. Over the course of their respective careers, these seniors have become part of the Big Ten fraternity, from John Wooden to Lucas Johnson, from Jerry Lucas to Jerry Francis. (more…)

With Honors

Hoopraker’s editorial board spent the better part of one hour today sequestered in the back booth of its favorite temple of triglycerides. The board, brows furrowed, blood caffeine levels climbing with each pour from waitress Kay’s Bunn-O-Matic samovar, hearts pounding against the bacon fat, had a serious job to perform. The 2006-07 Hoopraker All-Big Ten list was due. (more…)

Hoopraker wonders what percentage of the battered, success starved Michigan basketball following is secretly harboring pro-Buckeye fantasies this weekend. After several years of slow, teasing torture at the hands of Bill Martin and his protege, there have to be more than a few of the Maize and Blue willing to beta block their hatred for an afternoon and trade an Ohio State blowout at the Crisler Saturday for a new and better future. These folks, exchanging knowing glances at Zingerman’s and using semaphore outside the Brown Jug, are wondering if two resume sexying wins to close the season and a back-dooring of the Dance are worth a continuation of the lackluster Amaker decade. Ranking The Kings

Watching Ohio State’s uninspiring, referee-, injury-, statistical anomaly-enabled assumption of the Big Ten throne last Sunday put Hoopraker in a nostalgic frame of mind. It’s not that the Buckeyes haven’t earned their title, they have. They won more games than the field. And though they have a disappointing tendency to glide on talent, take thirty foot jumpshots in lieu of finding dunks for the most dominant college center in recent memory, and generally play with the kind of corporate dispassion of NBA journeymen, the Buckeyes may continue to win in March.
